Arlington police were investigating two ice cream vendor robberies that appear to be related.
The first occurred in the 1200 block of Susan Drive in Carl Knox Park around 5 p.m. Sunday. Two men attacked Jaime Camacho, 27, striking him with a hard metal object, Arlington police said. Mr. Camacho was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
Police believe the same two suspects then robbed Pablo Lopez, 55, about 40 minutes later in the 600 block of Jackson Square Drive. That worker was taken to Medical Center of Arlington with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
"With summer time upon us," said Arlington police Sgt. Os Flores, "we will want people to take as many safety precautions as possible." Sgt. Flores said vendors should limit the amount of cash they carry and be aware of their surroundings.
In the past few years, several ice cream vendors have been robbed and some even killed in the Dallas area. In 2002, a Nigerian ice cream truck driver was fatally shot in a robbery near Fair Park. The following year, a 41-year-old ice cream vendor was killed in Grand Prairie and a 28-year-old vendor was fatally shot near his cart in a Dallas neighborhood.
Dallas police have said ice cream vendors are robbery targets because they carry money and work alone. Dallas police have said the robberies are also hard to investigate because the vendors sometimes don’t have permanent addresses or phone numbers.
In the Arlington incidents, the suspects drove a light-blue Chevrolet Cavalier from the early ‘90s with Texas plates, police said.
One suspect was described as Hispanic man in his late teens or early 20s. He was about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighed about 250 pounds, police said. He wore a white T-shirt and jeans.
The second suspect was described as a black man, also in his late teens or early 20s. He was about 6 feet tall and had a thin build. He wore a white undershirt, an unbuttoned blue dress shirt and dark baggy jeans.
Anyone with information should call Arlington police at 817-459-5651 or Crime Stoppers at 817-469-TIPS. All tipsters remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
Police said Mr. Camacho's push cart company was La Princesa Paleteria. A worker at the Dallas office when reached by phone declined to give his name but said Mr. Camacho was self-employed and rented the cart.
The cart provider for Mr. Lopez was not immediately known, police said.
